Rutsuko N.Tanaka

From 2011 Rutsuko worked with global public relations agencies and non-profit organizations both in and outside Japan. She developed overseas public relations strategies and provided consulting and day-to-day support for Japanese firms, with her primary focus on business to business (B2B) advertising. In 2018 Rutsuko launched her career as a freelance public relations consultant. She helped her clients, including international organizations, non-profit organizations and start-ups, develop a public relations base, execute media campaigns, design their websites and carry out measures using social media platforms. While expanding her portfolio as public relations consultant, Rutsuko continued learning and pursued licenses in career consulting and career coaching. She also works as a coach and a training facilitator for businesses.

In April 2021, Rutsuko set up I’m In, Inc., a firm aimed at enhancing communications by integrating public relations and human resources and organizational development. Rutsuko’s mission is to harness the power of communication to generate inclusive communities where people are connected with others, an organization and a society.

Social issues that I seek to address through business or life-work

I was diagnosed with an illness when I was in junior high school and was homeschooled and obtained a U.S. high-school diploma. This achievement led me to becoming interested in helping people who were receiving an alternative form of schooling. I am interested in creating a “third place” for learning and working to generate more choices.

Although I aspired to work in social work, after returning to Japan, I chose to pursue my career in the public relations / communication field. This shift has led to my current interests in supporting businesses between overseas and Japan, and creating a cross-border flow of people and values that transcend the boundaries between the social and business sectors.

After giving birth to my first child, I worked as a corporate employee, a freelance and an entrepreneur while balancing profession, family responsibilities, parenting and education. This experience has fostered my desire to support as a career consultant people seeking to find the right workstyle when they are transitioning from one phase of life to another.

What I love

  • Jogging
  • Reading books
  • Writing about what I noticed in my daily work and at work and share funny stories
